WHY BNW?
From the beginning of photography, light was the essential and key part in creating a virtual drawing of what was represented in front of the lens, without it, imagery is impossible. Through the early to mid 20th century, all images were of BNW. Until around the 50’s when colour film was invented, Ernst Haas being one of the first to pioneer and endure colour photography, even though at the time, it was frowned upon. So now, nearly a century later, why still shoot BNW when we have progressed to colour? Well it’s quite simple… It’s just magical. Seeing the world in monochrome is fantasy like. Our world is full of vivid colours, when all colour is gone and we focus on light, it’s like we are in a whole new world. We are also then concentrated on emotion, light and texture, rather than an attractive dress, sunset or vivid reflection. Bnw offers so much more than colour does, as strange as that may sound. The world already consists of colour, isn’t it boring to replicate what we already see? Instead of create a new realm in the monochromatic world that takes all distractions away and focuses on the emotion and story of the scene and subject? The photography i like to portray is focused on the untold and unseen stories and emotions that are misunderstood or completely missed in society, when i view this in bnw, nothing else BUT that matters…
Glaring Into The Sun - 2023
Pictured here is a commuter on a sunny day. I watched her for a few minutes, analysing the way she just stared into the distance, not once did she check her phone, not once did she turn away. Purely enjoying an introspective moment undisturbed. It was wonderful to observe, I waited for the perfect lighting to hit her face and this is what i got… Try to convince me otherwise that colour could have made this image better.
OBSIDIAN RAIN - 2023
One of, if not my favourite image i’ve captured so far in my photographic journey. Strolling the lanes of Melbourne on an early saturday morning, at around 08:00, long shadows are prominent and a nice low sun which offers beautiful flares. Coincidentally, a company was cleaning buildings nearby with a pressure water on a rooftop, the water from the machine fell down like rain, creating such a lucky moment, i could not have been happier with the results. Absoloutely nothing could complete this image if it weren’t in BNW, It wouldn’t even make sense, it’s a perfect representation of how lighting can be played with in monochrome.
